THE FOOD PYRAMID - as a recipe for obesity
|
|
I have been saying "Down
With the Food Pyramid" for a long time, as I watched
our population get heavier and heavier. The obesity
epidemic started in the early 1980's, as we were
told to add more carbohydrates and decrease the fat
content of our diet. Before the '80's- the percentage
of obese Americans was 14%. At the end of the '80's
25% of Americans became obese. Currently, the statistics
for obesity have climbed to 33% which means one in
three Americans have this problem.
Unfortunately, this includes children
as well. Overweight children have tripled
in number. We may have created a younger
generation who will be less healthy
than their parents, as they surrender
to a refined carbohydrate diet. Adult
diseases, like type 2 Diabetes - which
used be adult onset - is now appearing
in children.
Grains, Grains, Grains. Even our
cattle is fed grains - instead of
being grass fed - as they used to
be. Have you noticed the bagel and
pizza shops everywhere?.
Sugar, Sugar, Sugar. We eat 170 pounds
of sugar per person per year. In
1921 we ate 10 pounds of sugar per
person. Sugar is a refined carbohydrate,
which can be addictive and which
destroys nutrients, in the body.
Coke and candy machines are everywhere
including in schools for the little
ones.
The combination of refined sugar
and grain products are definitely
problematic and I have heard them
referred to as "White Trash" What
does everyone eat for breakfast?
Pyramid bagels, toast, muffins, sugar
cereals, donuts, poptarts, - all
White Trash!
This was copied from the Boston
Globe, - October 1, 2003. " Nutritionists
called on the government yesterday
to overhaul dietary guidelines charging
that heavy reliance on carbohydrates
and fear of all fats has left the
nation seriously overweight. As obesity
affects more Americans, the government's
food pyramid is faulty, several specialists
said during a hearing by the Senate's
Consumer Affairs and Product Safety
Subcommittee.
"
Looking at some of the recommendations
from he Department of Agriculture
give the idea that they've forgotten
that we're feeding people, not Horses, " said
Walter Willet, professor of epidemiology
and nutrition at Harvard School of
Public Health. "
Yes the food pyramid caters to White
Trash - 8-11 servings of refined
bread, pasta, rice and sugar cereal.
How could that be healthy? It may
be profitable for the food manufacturers,
but it has been a disaster for the
American people. This has been an
experiment that has gone on long
enough. The Food Pyramid needs to
be destroyed or turned upside down.
It doesn't work as is, and does not
contribute to our wellness.
