HELLO FROM LAURA

This is the middle of summer and we have not had a real summer as of yet.  Too much rain, nastiness, and gloomy weather.  Hopefully,  August will be bright, sunny and warm.
Have a great rest of the summer.

Join me on the Social Networks.  I am now on Twitter.  You can check my Tweets at "Starwheel" and my new Blog is "Mind Body Information".

I took a Mind Body seminar, for CEU credits, last week called, "Anger, Anxiety and Hypertension".  It was taught by an  Dr. Michael Howard, an expert in
neuroscience.   His preliminary comment, was a bit of a shock to all of us.

" If you are over 40, you should not be here".

And what does that mean? From the physical, psychological, health and longevity standpoint we been given the same brain and genetic codes that the stone age people had 13,000 years ago.   These factors offered protection years ago, but not quite as beneficial in modern times.

  •  FOR THE MIND: The Fear Connection
  • Our brains and nervous systems are designed to go into an  acute stress response when there is the fear or threat of a predator or possible starvation.  The Fight or Flight response was imperative to stay alive, in those days.

Now we have stressful reactions, frequently and daily.  Our emotional reactions of anger, anxiety, fear and depression result in chronic stress leading to hypertension, heart problems, immune problems, diabetes, Alzheimers Disease and other chronic conditions.

What you think can make you sick.  The mind and nervous system doesn't care if it is real or imagined.  If your mind is upset - you go into stress mode.

Many fearful thoughts can be irrational. Everyday life just isn't that dangerous anymore. Our fears evolved as a basic survival mechanism. For most of us, it's internal flight or fight.  We are afraid of many things. Could be spiders, snakes, heights, public speaking, death, along with more and more financial, family, job and health worries.

Consciously or not, fearful thoughts can paralyze us, not allowing flexibility in our responses. Stress reactions become habits.  What can we do?  Look for options and break the connections to stressful thinking and situations.

"Change Your Mind, Change Your Body"

  • FOR THE BODY: Breaking the Cycle
  • If you are jealous, that you are not a caveman, I must remind you that average life expectancy, in those days, was about 27 years old.  One out of three made it to 40.
It is only in the past 100 years life expectancy doubled to 78.3 years because of Medication, immunization  and Sanitation.  100 years ago, people died of TB, Pneumonia, and Dysentery.  We do not die of those problems, we live longer.  We die of chronic stress transformed into internal negative emotions transformed into  chronic diseases.  Did you know? More angry men die of heart attacks than non angry men. Caretakers are more prone to stress than others.

Changing physical habits will help with stress.
    1. Eat a healthy diet - lots of fruits and vegetables
    2. Exercise regularly and be active during the day
    3. Minimize caffeine, stimulants and alcohol.
    4. Take short breaks when working or studying
    5. Relax and unwind when you can.
Yes, folks - meditation, prayer is valuable
    6. Muscle relaxation exercises are also good.
