Fall is here in all its glory. Leaves changing from green
to orange and red, reminding us it to change our diets
as well. The weather is getting cooler, creating a need
to eat warmer foods like stews, soups, hot cereals,
cooked root vegetables and more protein. Later this
month, we will enjoy the festivities of Halloween. Great
for the kids, but all that candy - Oh My!

Darkness comes earlier and earlier, now around
7pm instead of 8:30pm. If you find you are feeling out

FOR THE BODY: Do You Need a Fat Change?
one time, we believed fat made us fat. Not true. Most fats are essential
to good health. BUT- Trans-
fatty acids (TFA) are not healthy.
TFA is found in small amounts in various animal products
such as beef, pork, lamb and butterfat. TFA is also formed in
the process of hydrogenation, making margarine, other
shortenings, cooking oils and the many foods made
from them. Foods are hydrogenated for longer shelf life
or to get a solid fat product, like margarine.
TFA's are harmful as they
tend to raise total blood cholesterol levels and raise LDL ("bad")
cholesterol while lowering HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. These
changes may increase the risk of heart disease.
Recently the FDA
passed a regulation requiring trans fat to be listed on the
nutrition labels. READ LABELS!

at breakfast (3.2 g of TFA) and a large order of french fries
at lunch (6.8 g of TFA)
