about mercury retrograde
by Laura Zohman MA LDN CHT

Mercury Retrograde happens 3 times a year for a period about 3 weeks. Mercury the planet, looks like it is going backwards in the sky and is mirrored here on Earth, as we seem to head backwards as well.

The planet Mercury rules all types of communication, including listening, speaking, learning, reading, editing, researching, negotiating, selling, and buying. Mercury also rules contracts, agreements, manuscripts, term papers, agreements, deeds, leases, wills, etc.

Also included is technology, computers, transportation, shipping, and travel. When Mercury retrogrades, these areas tend to get weird. Computers, phones and other machines may flip out and trips may be redirected.

We may not work as well as normal. Brains may be foggy, and thinking may be muddled. Important decisions should be delayed.

Not a good time for anything new. Nothing is settled successfully for the future during these periods. If a decision is made, it may be subject to change, after Mercury turns to direct motion or later.

During the retrograde, when I shop for personal items like clothes, I may return them after a couple of days, thinking - why did I buy this? Make sure you can return whatever you buy during this time. Not a good time to buy larger items like a cars, houses, or computers. If you buy a house, problems could crop up later that were completely unanticipated.

Wait to start a new job. It won't necessarily be the position you thought it was when you accepted it.

Years ago, my husband consulted an astrologer to find out why his employee did not work out. The astrologer said, because you hired him when Mercury was retrograde. Simple as that.

I try not to travel during this time. If I do, there may be changes. I recheck all schedules many times and make sure baggage is going where I am headed. I recheck and confirm appointments for time and place, as well.

What are the benefits of Mercury Retrograde? We become more careful, as this is a time to slow down, review, reinvent, research, revise, redo and repeat. What you do may have to be duplicated more than once and investigated. Not a tragedy, but a way to perfect our lives.

A client is having surgery during this period of time. She knows it will be more than one surgery. The repetition is expected. Perfect for this time.

Do revisit old friends and memories from the past. Work on ancestry.com.

Recheck that manuscript for mistakes. It may not ready for to be presented to the public. You’ll be glad you did.

Patience! Not everyone’s experience is the same. Some have it easier than others. If you were born with Mercury Retro in your natal chart - this can be a great time. However, Mercury Retro can be especially hard on Virgo and Gemini, or those with mercurial planets in their charts.

I wonder how Donald Trump (a Gemini) reacts when his computer falls apart or how Obama (Gemini moon) responds when his brilliant mind falters.

Take it slow during this time. Mercury Retro slows us down anyway. There may be blessings at the end of the retrograde period. We may have discovered through research and waiting, that the car or job or computer of our dreams is not quite right. A better opportunity may appear because of our reluctance to jump into something wrong and our patience to oversee and test our options. Thank you Mercury Retrograde.
